TO OBTAIN A HANDGUN LICENSE

also known as a SELF DEFENSE ACT (SDA) LICENSE

You must attend a handgun safety course before applying. Please enclose your original certificate of completion in your Self Defense Act License application packet. (The certificate doesn’t expire. As long as you have the original certificate, you may submit it at any time.)

The current application is four pages long and contains 44 yes/no questions. The old application is five pages long, including page five with 11 yes/no questions. The old five page application won’t be accepted after January 31, 2013. Please complete the application, including your OSBI payment information on page four.

Purchase two passport-size photos of yourself at Walgreens, CVS, Kinko’s FedEx, or a photography studio. Write your name and social security number on the back of the photos, and bring them in with your application. The photos must be professionally made. Homemade photos aren’t accepted. Photos aren’t available at the sheriff’s office; purchase them before you get here.

When you arrive at the sheriff’s office, we will provide you with fingerprint cards to fill out. Bring your eyeglasses if you need them when you write.

The sheriff’s office charges $25 for fingerprinting, and processing your application. Only money orders and cashier’s checks made payable to CCSO are accepted for this $25 fee.

The OSBI fee is $100 for a five year license or $200 for a ten year license. This fee must be paid with a money order or a cashier’s check made payable to OSBI, or with a credit or debit card. No cash. No personal checks.

If you weren’t born in the U S A, please bring proof of citizenship (passport or birth certificate).

Bring all paperwork, photos, fees, and photo I D to 128 South Peters Ave in downtown Norman on WEDNESDAY or THURSDAY ONLY between 1 and 4pm – no appointments, just walk in. Fingerprinting and application processing isn’t done at any other time. Applications won’t be processed on federal holidays (Thanksgiving, Independence Day, etc).
